Methodology
We want results you can trust, which means being clear about how each measurement is made and where it can mislead.
Determining your IP
Your public IP is read from the connection metadata provided by our edge network for your request. Country/ASN come from the same metadata when available. This describes your network, not your identity or exact location.
DNS lookups
DNS queries use DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) against well-known public resolvers. We distinguish real DNS states: NOERROR with answers (success), NOERROR without answers (no records of that type), NXDOMAIN (domain absent), SERVFAIL, REFUSED, timeout, and resolver errors.
Comparing resolvers (propagation)
The propagation checker queries several recursive resolvers and compares their cached answers. It does not query authoritative servers per region or measure DNS from specific cities, and it never shows a map of invented locations. Multi-value answers (A, AAAA, MX, NS) are normalized so that a different order is not reported as a mismatch.
IP geolocation limits
IP-to-location mapping is approximate and frequently points to a provider’s gateway rather than a user. We show location only when a reliable data source provides it, and label it as an estimate.
RDAP lookups
Registration data comes from RDAP, the structured successor to WHOIS. We display only what registries publish; fields hidden for privacy are shown as absent, never guessed.
Response-time measurement
Response time is the total time for an HTTP request/response from our server. It is not an ICMP ping, and we do not fabricate per-phase (DNS/TLS/TTFB) numbers we cannot reliably measure. Results vary with caching, CDNs, and network location.
Caching
We cache successful DNS/RDAP results briefly and respect TTLs; NXDOMAIN and error responses are cached only very briefly or not at all. Personal responses like "What Is My IP" are never shared-cached.
Timestamps
Every result records the time it was produced (in your browser’s local time on display, ISO 8601 in the raw JSON) so you can judge freshness.
